The Castello district, the largest and most curious in all of Venice, takes its name from the eighth century fortress that once stood on the island of Olivolo, now called the island of San Pietro di Castello. The island church, on the other hand, was the episcopal seat from the 9th century and the Cathedral of Venice from 1451 to 1807 and for centuries it was the most important religious center in the city.
This sestiere, moreover, with the large shipyard of the Arsenale that built the warships of the unbeatable Venetian fleet, was for a long time the beating heart of Venice. The most popular area in a city that can sometimes be a little overwhelming is Riva degli Schiavoni, the perfect place to take a breath of fresh air in the shaded gardens or on the banks of the lagoon caressed by the breeze.
