In this chapter we discuss one of man's most incredible and surprising works, located in the heart of Valsugana, the Covolo di Butistone.
The Covolo di Butistone is a natural cave suspended on the rocky wall overlooking the Brenta river, located in the narrowest point of the Valsugana in the province of Vicenza. Until the end of the 17th century, this ancient military fortification blocked the Brenta Canal between Primolano and Cismon del Grappa, performing many functions which were later delegated to the 19th century Fort Tombion.
The first historical signs date back to some documents of the eleventh century, although numerous historians and chroniclers of the past have tried to analyze the origins of Covolo, but without being able to find significant elements to establish it. The Covolo di Butistone was composed of two structures, a duty house, where since the Middle Ages taxes for passing goods were collected, and the military fortification that stood inside the cave.
Today the remains of the fortification are clearly visible, which was accessed in ancient times thanks to a winch. Inside we find the splendid embattled balustrade, the well, the cistern, the posts for the colubrines, the prison and the room for the troops.
