In this chapter we discuss one of the most elegant villas in the Vicenza area, located near the city of Lonigo, the Villa Pisani Bonetti.
Villa Pisani Bonetti is located about thirty kilometers from Vicenza, in the hamlet of Bagnolo, in the municipality of Lonigo, among the vineyards and crops of the wonderful Berici Hills. It is one of the most significant architectures by Andrea Palladio, who designed it in 1542 for the Pisani brothers, who at the time were one of the most powerful Venetian families, who administered the lands and rice fields of the neighboring lands. The Pisan merchants of San Paternian, also known as over the counter, managed to accumulate a large wealth thanks to trade, and in the 16th century, they changed their investment strategy, shifting their interests in the purchase of funds on the mainland.
The realization of Villa Pisani Bonetti represents a turning point for the young architect, with a consequent jump in the scale of the orders, up to then especially from Vicenza. Palladio's project immediately proved to be very ambitious, as it had the aim of creating an elegant country house suitable for the refined tastes of the Pisani brothers but which, at the same time, also had to be functional for agricultural work, thus introducing in the world of architecture the concept of useful and delightful.
Like a Roman temple, the villa stands on a base that gives impetus to the building, mirroring a structure of the Venetian warehouse-house, with an entrance by land and another on the water, and with a large passing room. It is immediately characterized by its curious severed turrets, which rise from the central body of the building, and which recall the structure of the Villa Trissino in Cricoli. At first the motif of the forceps compartment is rejected, leaving space, just during the works, to a motif with three rusticated arches surmounted by a triangular tympanum.
While inside we can find remarkable pictorial decorations that deal with the "Metamorphosis of Ovid" by Francesco Torbido in dialogue with the space and enhancing its monumentality. Publius Ovid Nasone, known simply as Ovid, was born in Sulmona 43 BC. and died in Tomi on 19 AD, he was a very important Roman poet, one of the main exponents of Latin literature and elegiac poetry, which groups the lyrical compositions of Greek and Latin poetry combined with a specific metric form. The poet's fame was as great in life as in later eras, in fact over the centuries many other artists took up the themes or imitated their style, such as Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, Francesco Petrarca, William Shakespeare and Gabriele d'Annunzio.
