In this chapter we will deal with the spectacular mountain range that crosses Pasubio Mount of the Piccole Dolomites.
The Pasubio Mount is a massive calculation that lies between the borders of the province of Vicenza and that of Trento, comprised of a complex that connects the Piccole Dolomites with the Altopiano di Folgaria, and is remembered above all for the bitter fighting that took place during World War I. It stands out for its steep and steep slopes of a typical dolomitic character, from where spiers and pinnacles emerge, especially in the southern slope, which is all surrounded by deep gorges.
In the highest part, the Pasubio is made up of a large plateau of about two thousand meters above sea level, in which steep ridges alternate and wide basins covered with grass, also used for pastures. The territory is still quite wild, the impervious side valleys offer multiple paths and paths to go into the mountain massif.
In its main summit, which extends in a north-south direction, from Cogolo Alto to the maximum height of Pasubio, from which stands out above all the 2.239 meters Cima Palon, located at the head of Val Canale, then continuing towards the 2,220 Dente Italiano meters, which represented the first Italian line during the Great War and the Austrian Tooth of 2.203 meters, which constituted the Austro-Hungarian line, and finally Roite Mount of 2.144 meters. All this area enclosed between the Cima Pilon and the two Teeth was declared a sacred area in 1922, as it was the scene of bloody battles.
Unfortunately, Pasubio Mount still preserves the scars inflicted by those bloody battles, which lasted from June 1916 to November 1918. The whole territory is covered with structures of a century ago, such as trenches, walkways, tunnels and shelters, in a landscape battered by the craters of bombs and grenades.
Today, the network of paths that crosses the mountain massif in every direction, follows the military paths used during the war, through suggestive and exciting ways, also taking advantage of the ancient paths of the local shepherds.
Also not to be missed is the Ossuary of Pasubio, a monument dedicated to the fallen of the First World War which is located on the Bellavista hill, about 2 kilometers from Pian delle Fugazze. Its origins date back to 1917, when the surviving Italian soldiers of the First Army decided to build a shrine, that is, a small temple, to the Immaculate Madonna, with the permission of the bishop of Vicenza. The Ossuary of Pasubio, together with the Military Shrine of Grappa Mount, the Ossuary of Tonezza del Cimone and the Military Shrine of Asiago, are the four monuments dedicated to the fallen after the war and which became a symbol of the territory, in fact they appear in one of the four quarters of the coat of arms of the province of Vicenza.
