The medieval town of Soave is all enclosed within the high walls that descend from the castle and the green hills of vineyards from which the famous wine comes to life. The first settlements date back to the Stone Age although officially an ancient Germanic population was founded by the Swabians.
The historic village of Soave
It is believed, in fact, that the name of this wonderful town derives from this population, which was called in Latin Suaves. The historic center still lives today within the articulated city walls, almost to protect the liveliness of its inhabitants and the ancient traditions that feed this fairytale village day after day.
Typical military construction of the Middle Ages is the Soave Castle, restored and transformed by the Scaligeri dominates the plain below thanks to its strategic position on Tenda Mount. Erected on the remains of an older Roman fortification, it still retains a mighty keep and high walls, which enclose, on several levels, the ancient medieval village.
The main entrance is equipped with a drawbridge and is surmounted by a tower called San Giorgio, due to the sculptural relief of the Saint preserved in a niche above the door.
The first courtyard was erected by the Republic of Venice in the fifteenth century, within its walls we can still admire an ancient church that could have origins dating back to the tenth century, during the period of the invasions of the Hungarians.
The second courtyard, also called the Madonna, because on the entrance door there is a tower with a fresco representing the virgin, dated 1321. Finally, the last and smaller courtyard is located higher than the others and it keeps a well at its center.
This area was the most difficult to conquer, in fact it stands out over the entire mighty keep, which at the time must also have been used as a prison, given the numerous bones found during a restoration. From here you can access the walkway, from where you can admire and enjoy the spectacular panorama of the Veronese hills and the Soave castle from above.
The castle can be reached both by car and on foot, through a small road that starts from Antenna Square in the center of the medieval village. Immersed in the hills and volcanic soils, these generous lands offer tourists various typical products, including the famous white wine, recognized all over the world thanks to its straw yellow color and its intense and delicate smell.
The Soave DOC area includes various municipalities scattered throughout the territory, while in the specification of Classico it is reserved for the product obtained from grapes vinified in the municipalities of Soave and Monteforte d 'Alpone, the so-called historical area of Soave white wine.
