The Giulietta House is located a few steps from Erbe square at 27 Via Cappello where, according to history, Romeo Montecchi climbed the balcony to reach his beloved Giulietta Capuleti.
The Giulietta House
The tragic story written by the Vicenza-born writer Luigi da Porto around 1520, inspired countless poems, films, ballets, dramas and tragedies, including those of William Shakespeare and that of the poet and writer Dante Alighieri, who in a purgatory canto referred to these two families.
A bronze statue stands out in the courtyard of the house, it is a workmanlike reproduction of the original made in 1969 by the sculptor Nereo Costantini and then placed there in 1972.
The attentions reserved by tourists, on the right breast, support the popular tradition whereby those who caress him will benefit from luck in love. The house of Giulietta Capuleti is a resistant medieval construction, and is believed to have been the home of the Dal Cappello family in the 13th century, which precisely gives the street its name today.
The entire building has been restored and renovated several times over the centuries by the many owners who have followed. Today, inside, we find numerous works of art, in fact there are frescoes from the sixteenth century from other buildings in the city, including the Portrait of a Lady and Woman on the Balcony which are attributed to the period of Paolo Veronese.
On the top floor we can admire a collection of household accessories from the Middle Ages and the early Veronese Renaissance. Finally we find the characteristic Juliet bed, with the costumes and furnishings of the famous film Romeo and Juliet by Franco Zeffrelli of 1968, a highly successful cinematographic transposition of the famous and homonymous play by William Shakespeare.
