We leave the hills to return to the long lake to Torri del Benaco, a small pretty fishing village, located along the Riviera degli Ulivi, on the eastern shore of Lake Garda. This graceful inhabited center develops from the small port, with its typical fishermen's houses and the beautiful church, up to the historical center around Calderini Square.
Torri del Benaco
Its lakefront lends itself to pleasant walks, at any time of the year, thanks also to the numerous buildings of the Lombard era, which were once used for the construction of boats or for the processing of marble. In short, a perfect place for lovers of quiet and relaxing holidays, where the surrounding nature mixes with the calm blue waters of Lake Garda, all garnished by the many food and wine products of these lands.
The most representative building is the Castle of Torri del Benaco, renovated already in the 10th century, when Berengario I, king of Italy, granted to restore the ancient fortress and to build new walls, to defend the inhabitants of the area from the raids of the Hungarians.
It was taken up again and modernized again 1383, by Antonio della Scala, to defend his possessions against the expansionist aims of the Visconti of Milan. The Visconti period coincided with a very long phase of peace throughout the territory, thus also marking the decline of the fortress, which was beginning to lose its defensive character.
In 1760 a beautiful greenhouse for citrus was built, definitively abandoning the walls, which was demolished. Today there are the keep and three towers of the castle, a beautiful lemon grove and the Scaliger Castle Museum, which preserves some aspects of the culture, olive growing, fishing and rock carvings of Lake Garda. It is also possible to walk the walkway of the towers, from which you can enjoy the view of the typical marina, the village below and the landscape that surrounds it.
Continuing north we arrive in Brenzone, a young municipality in a vast territory in the north-east of Lake Garda, made up of numerous small villages scattered both on the slopes of the mountain and on the lake. Among the most important countries we can mention Sommavilla, Porto, Assenza where, during the First and Second World War, a military depot stood on the opposite island and, finally, Maringa and Castelletto, the largest countries.
Between the courtyards and the stone districts that characterize the hilly landscape, you climb up to San Zeno di Montagna, a natural terrace where you can admire the view and enjoy the magic that only Lake Garda can offer. Continue to the parish church, where you will understand why this town is called the "balcony of Lake Garda". Not to be missed, in this area, is the tasting of typical and indigenous cheeses, which still today the various dairies produce according to the ancient Cimbrian tradition.
