In this chapter we discuss one of the islands of the smallest but most characteristic and pretty Venetian lagoon, the Mazzorbo Island.
The Mazzorbo Island is a small and pretty island in the Venetian lagoon, an environment particularly surrounded by myths and superstitions, where it was once reserved only for fishermen and hunters.
Located a few steps from the colorful and crowded island of laces, it consists of three islets, including the Eremite Island and the Santa Caterina Island, which was divided into two by a recent excavation for the construction of the Mazzorbo canal.
It was once called Maiorbo, and like other islands in the Venetian lagoon, it is populated by the inhabitants of the mainland who fled the invasions of the barbarians and those of the Lombards, who around the sixth and seventh centuries strengthened their kingdom over that of the Byzantines.
Other finds, which we can find at the Provincial Museum of Torcello, bring the attendance of these territories to more distant eras, demonstrated by the discovery of some jars of the Mycenaean civilization, dating back to the Bronze Age in Greece.
Over the centuries, the island of Mazzorbo has developed a lot, also thanks to the important commercial and religious center of Torcello. Today it is connected to the island of Burano by a wooden arched bridge, and is a quiet place between gardens and orchards where you can take refuge from the crowds of Galuppi Square and the summer heat. It is the ideal place to savor local wine and traditional fish dishes. Do not miss the opportunity to discover small corners of the lagoon, often the simplest things are the deepest ones.
The wonderful islands of the Venetian lagoon, with their most characteristic and intimate aspect.
