The San Zaccaria Church was probably founded in the 7th century by St. Magno and is one of the few dedicated to an Old Testament prophet. The first building was intended to house the remains of the father of San Giovanni Battista, Zaccaria, donated by the Byzantine emperor Leo V l'Armeno to the city of Venice, to consolidate friendship.
San Zaccaria Church
Located in the quiet square just a step away from Schiavoni Riva, in the Castello district, the church is a happy marriage in flamboyant Gothic style with the classicism of the Renaissance.
It was the doges Angelo and Giustiniano Partecipazio who added a Benedictine convent to the structure, closely connected with the church, but which soon acquired a bad reputation, for the rather singular and rebellious behavior of the nuns, moreover noble girls of Venetian families.
It is said that despite the cloister, parties and banquets were held in this place, the young nuns had transformed the parlor, a place where family or guests are met, into an elegant lounge reserved for concerts and various shows, with an interrupted " pilgrimage ”of the young knights of the city.
This does not mean that the Doge went to visit them every Easter, a habit born out of gratitude because the convent had renounced part of its garden to enlarge San Marco square.
The San Zaccaria church has three cross naves, with the façade divided into three parts by combined columns, with numerous windows surmounted by the large arched tympanum, which supports the statue of San Zaccaria.
The artistic pearls of the interior are, the famous altarpiece of 1505 Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints by Giovanni Bellini, with sumptuous colors and exquisite serenity, also in the sacristy we find The Birth of Saint John the Baptist by Tintoretto and The Flight into Egypt of Giandomenico Tiepolo, finally, but not least the Madonna and Child with Saints of Palma il Giovane.
A unique church of its kind, which continues to preserve the burials of many doges and a large number of works of considerable value.
