Moriago della Battaglia, located north of the Piave river and the Montello hill, it is a particularly quiet location marked by the events of the Great War.
Moriago della Battaglia
Located not far from the Treviso Prealps, and the streets of the famous Prosecco wine, it is an ideal destination to spend a few days in a small village with a great story to tell and to discover the wide range of typical products that this area offers.
Among these green hills are born Asolo Prosecco Superiore and Rosso Montello DOCG, which despite being produced in a corner of the Veneto, their stia and tradition compete at the top with the best international wines.
Moriago della Battaglia hosts a monumental and naturalistic area of 112 hectares called Isola della Morte, now also called Isola Verde, for its long tree-lined streets and for the rich vegetation of its park.
This name was given in memory of the numerous victims, both sides, who remained on the ground in the decisive days of the First World War. On October 27, 1918 there was the assault of the Arditi who conquered Moriago, who managed to break through the Austrian lines along the waterway, thus marking the beginning of the decisive battle of Vittorio Veneto, a very important clash for the history of Italy.
The place is dedicated to the memory and popular piety, affected immediately after the conflict by the continuous emergence of weapons and corpses of soldiers from the gravel of the Piave river. "On this island it was difficult to walk, so much was the clutter of corpses" (Boy of 99) ". The Island of Death is one of the most sacred places in Italy where you can remember the many dead soldiers, other places in these areas are in Nervesa della Battaglia and Pederobba.
Inside the park, today, you can take walks or bike rides among the spontaneous orchids that grow on green meadows. All the paths of the large oasis, named after the regiments that fought on the Piave, converge on the "Ragazzi del 99" square where the Votive Temple at the Madonnina del Piave and other war relics are located.
The area is particularly tidy, with a unique landscape to admire and contemplate, a visit to this park will thrill you a lot, thanks to the historical references and information panels. The park is accessible to all, equipped with picnic areas, a bar and a bowling green, among the various paths to be taken, the one that leads to the Piave river is the most suggestive and particular.
