Intact places, where large forests and water sources coexist, marked with deep scars from the war, in an exclusive and diverse territory. In fact, attention to the protection of biodiversity finds space both in the hills and on the plains, obtaining a wide range of high quality typical products, such as potatoes, honey, peas, apples and the famous Montello DOCG wine.
The first traces in Giavera del Montello date back to some settlements of the Neanderthal Man, as confirmed by the lithic finds and a human skeleton dating back to 40,000 years ago. The lithic finds are stone objects built or worked by man, like weapons, from the Middle Palaeolithic period, about 200,000 years ago.
The area where the Homo Neanderthalensis was found is the Bo ’de Pavei cave, where it was buried, later it was also inhabited by the Sapiens Sapiens and a few centuries later by hunter-gatherers from the area.
In Giavera del Montello there is one of the many British Cemeteries that arose in memory of the English allies who fell with honor during the war after having spent a long time on Montello thus allowing the reorganization of the Italian troops after the defeat of Caporetto. "The enemy troops that occupied the surrounding woods immediately opened fire and many of our men fell to never get up again ..." (Norman Gladden in "Beyond the Piave").
The well-ordered cemetery, like all British cemeteries, houses the corpses of 417 Commonwealth soldiers. The tombstones are all white and the same, which shows the identity of the deceased, the age at the time of death and the role in the army. In the stone plaques we can also find touching phrases, dedicated by the family members to the missing soldier, in other cases we can also appreciate the coats of arms of the belonging division.
