Roncade is a lively municipality in the province of Treviso, one of the largest in the area and with one of the most complex and well-structured historical developments in the Veneto region.
Roncade
In fact, it is located in a strategic point of passage, as today it is crossed by the Treviso-Mare, while once by the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, a Roman road that dates back to the first century AD. It is thought that this artery was built to connect the Roman areas of the flat land with the Germanic world, through the Alps up to the Danube in Bavaria and beyond, as remains of the Via Annia were found.
This Roman road, instead, connected the city of Padova with Aquileia, bringing a rapid growth of the territory, thanks to the nearby Altino, where the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate started, Roncade became a very important communication hub and a big center for business.
Do not miss Villa Giustiniani, also called Roncade Castle for its towers and crenellated walls. This villa, in fact, is a majestic Renaissance complex of the '500 that rises in the center of the city, a forerunner of what will then be the movement of the Venetian and Palladian villas.
By visiting Villa Giustiniani you can still taste the Venetian agricultural traditions of the past, which in this case is the wine production. The complex consists of a noble palace that houses ancient rooms, on the sides, two long barns embrace the large garden, all surrounded by high walls crenellated with corner towers.
To complete and strengthen the defenses of the imposing castle the wide water moat, fed the nearby river Musestre, now carefully equipped for pleasant walks with the family.
