In the past it was a renowned Roman Municipium and reached its maximum splendor between the first and second centuries, with almost 50,000 inhabitants.
The task of preserving the finds and traces of this great past, with remains dating back to pre-Roman, Roman and late antiquity, belongs to one of the oldest museums in Italy, built in 1876, with its headquarters in the colonnade of Foscolo Palace.
Among the various things not to be missed in this city, it is certainly Grande Square, considered among the most beautiful in the Veneto region for its particular stage shape. Here, once a year, during the summer, "Opera in Piazza" is held, an international festival that attracts artists and fans from all over Europe.
We also find the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, built in the 11th century, which houses some works by Pomponio Amalteo, Domenico Tintoretto and Jacopo Palma il Giovane and a copy of an altarpiece by Cima da Conegliano.
In the historic center of Oderzo there are some archaeological sites, including the Roman Forum area, between via Roma and via Mazzini, which preserves a forensic complex, with a domus, the remains of a square, the remains of a basilica and of a staircase. The area of the former prisons, near Torresin, is made up of finds and walls from various eras.
The Via dei Mosaici area preserves a part of two wells and the remains of a Domus, a typical Roman house. The area of via Dalmazia, hidden on a social cellar, preserves the remains of a well. And near the tourist office there is a glass pyramid, similar to that of the Louvre in Paris, with some remains of a medieval wall inside. In short, a city to be discovered and admired, located a few kilometers from the famous seaside resorts of Venice and the pretty villages of the Prosecco hills of the Marca Trevigiana.
