Asolo, the "city of a hundred horizons" as Giosuè Carducci defined it, cradled between rolling hills in a timeless atmosphere, where the breathtaking panorama is intertwined with the millenary historical center surrounded by ancient walls dominated by the imposing fortress.
Asolo
Seductive and intriguing, it enchanted a cosmopolitan court of artists and intellectuals kidnapped by its peaceful beauty. A magical place, it is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, perched on green hills of olive and cypress trees, where every glimpse is a source of inspiration. "At the top of the Fortress one feels like at the top of a diamond, where every facet causes an iridescent panorama" wrote Giovanni Comisso (1895-1969) in “Veneto Felice”.
Going down a staircase not far from the square you reach the Cathedral of Asolo, of medieval origins, but which presents itself with Romanesque-Gothic features, with the presence of some Renaissance elements.
Inside we find numerous treasures, such as, Assumption of the Virgin painted by Lorenzo Lotto, the altarpiece of the Assumption by Jacopo Bassano, and the altarpiece of San Prosdocimo by Pietro Damini. The Loggia del Capitano, now home to the civic museum, is a fifteenth-century building covered with frescoes, plaques and coats of arms.
Inside you can admire a varied collection of archaeological material, paintings and sculptures, as well as documents and memories related to the vine of the Queen of Cyprus Caterina Cornaro, the Italian theater actress Eleonora Duse and the nonconformist explorer and writer Freya Stark, all of whom they tied their fate to that of the city. Other artists who were inspired by these ways are the composer Gian Francesco Malipiero and the English poet Robert Browning.
The Castle of the Queen is of medieval origin, partially demolished in the nineteenth century, today only three towers symbolize the elegant structure inhabited by Caterina Cornaro and Pietro Bembo, including the clock tower, visible from every corner of the city. The Rocca di Asolo or also called Rocca Braida is an imposing fortress located on Monte Ricco.
The first complex probably dates back, according to some excavations, to the pre-Roman era, as evidenced by some finds of mosaics now preserved in the city's face. Walking through the medieval alleys you will discover typical cafes and taverns that serve delicacies that cannot be found elsewhere, such as musetto imbriago (pork cooked in wine) and a wide range of typical food and wine products of the area.
Among these hills we find another precious excellence, the Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG, obtained mainly with the white variety of the Glera, looks like a dry, light and elegant wine, with a fresh and fruity aroma, with a soft and well harmonized taste .
