Fratta Polesine is a small Italian town known for being the birthplace of Giacomo Matteotti 1885-1924, Italian politician, journalist and anti-fascist who denounced the electoral frauds implemented by the nascent dictatorship of Mussolini.
Fratta Polesine - Villa Badoer
The city, however, is famous above all for the marvelous Villa Badoer by the architect Andrea Palladio and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Born as a farm for the control and management of the land and as a summer holiday resort, today it is a museum and an ideal place to carry out numerous events.
However, in these areas there were numerous other lay and ecclesiastical landowners, who had built their own funds long before the Venetians arrived.
So, as the last arrivals, they had to settle for what they found, often buying distant plots. But one day, the Badoer and the Morosini took advantage of the vast reclamation work in the Polesine and took possession of large organized estates and thus transforming the villas as collectors of the surrounding agricultural production.
The villa is a triumph of sobriety and elegance that every year attracts tourists from all over the world. It is built on a stone base in order to protect it from possible river flooding and to amplify the scenic impact.
The barchesse developed laterally recall the exedra-shaped arcades, which decorate Bernini's colonnade in San Pietro in Rome, instead of simple warehouses for collecting food. The images that fresco the walls of the various rooms belong to a singular and accurate painting, and represent mythological and allegorical themes linked to the territory.
