In this chapter we discuss one of the masterpieces of the architect Andrea Palladio for the Venetian countryside, Villa Cornaro, located in Piombino Dese.
Villa Cornaro or Cornèr is one of the masterpieces designed by architect Andrea Palladio for the Venetian countryside and especially for Giorgio Cornaro who commissioned the work in 1553. The villa of Piombino Dese marks a clear leap in prestige and quality, especially in the spending abilities of the Palladian clientele, until then reserved for a Vicentine audience.
All this thanks to the architect's trips to Rome between 1540 and 1548, which confronted him with the tradition of classical Rome and with the architectural developments of his contemporaries.
The villa is developed in a double order of columns, Ionic and Corinthian, thus setting two overlapping lodges. In the same period, between 1550 and 1560 he also designed Villa Pisani in Montagnana in a very similar way, which he later portrayed side by side in the second Book of Architecture, thus taking up the tradition of the princely residence on the outskirts of the city.
Inside we find the extraordinary hall, intended for guests, with four columns supporting a ceiling full of frescoes. Despite the changes in the post-World War II period in the seventies and eighties, Villa Cornaro maintains a good state of conservation and is a World heritage site.
