In this chapter we will discuss one of the most famous cities of the Euganean Hills Regional Park, thanks to its thermal waters, Abano Terme.
Abano Terme, located in the northeastern part of the Euganean Hills a few kilometers from Padua, is the main Euganean spa center. This pretty town lies in an extinct volcanic area and the benefits of its thermal waters are famous throughout the world.
Thanks to the particular conformation of the place where it stands, this city has always been at the center of multiple interests since the time of the Roman Empire. Abano together with the neighboring municipalities creates the most important spa in the world, attracting many tourists every day.
The origins of the Euganean Hills date back to about 34 million years ago, affiliated with the cracks in the earth's crust, which generated large magmatic masses that spilled from the ground, together with the great floods that occurred in the Veneto-Romagna plain.
This change has favored the formation of thermomineral hot water springs, and over time, facilitated the allocation of populations in the territory due to the beneficial effects of the waters. The ancient spa was, in the sixth century BC, in the territory of the current municipality of Montegrotto Terme, as evidenced by the archaeological excavations and the multiple finds preserved in the museums of Padua and Este.
It reached its peak in the imperial age, according to some writings of Suetonius, especially when Tiberius Julius Cesara Augustus, second Roman emperor, stopped at the temple of Aponus to consult the oracle. After obtaining a favorable response to the outcome of the war, he threw some gold dice into the source as a sign of gratitude.
In those years, the Paduan territory was transformed into a Roman municipality with a local nobility, paying great attention to the ternal care, as was the case in Rome, increasing the activities and the related infrastructures. With the term Aponus we wanted to mention the ancient Venetian god of thermal waters, identified with Apollo, dispenser of health.
