In this article we discuss the cycle route of the Riviera Berica, a relaxing path that connects the Berici Hills to the historic village of Montagnana.
The cycle route of the Riviera Berica is a relaxing and suggestive itinerary not to be missed, which takes place among the natural, historical and artistic beauties in the heart of the Veneto region. It is a historical route, where once the railway tram passed, which connected Vicenza, Longare, Noventa Vicentina and Montagnana, with convoys pulled by steam locomotives called "Vaca Mora" a nice term that indicated both speed and the slow walking of cows, to the great puffs of black coal smoke.
The section from Noventa Vicentina to Montagnana was abandoned during the Second World War, following irreparable damage, while the section between Vicenza and Noventa Vicentina was abandoned in 1978. In 2012 some central sections of the route were recovered, thus connecting the cycle route of the Berica Riviera, completing it for about 33 kilometers on its own premises.
The route is easily practicable by everyone, however it crosses other more demanding cycling routes that lead to the Berici Mountains and the Euganean Hills.
The cycle path starts both from the historic center of Vicenza, in particular from the train station, and from Lake Fimon between the Berici Hills, skirting hills and limestone slopes. Interesting are the Villa Valmarana ai Nani with paintings by Giambattista Tiepolo and Villa Almerico Capra, known as La Rotonda, one of the most extraordinary and famous works of the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio.
Continue through the Venetian countryside, which despite being on the edge of industrial areas is still relatively intact, distinguished by its great views and some wetlands and ditches, with the presence of a wide variety of wild flora and fauna. Montagnana is one of the most enchanting fortified cities and it owes this charm to its perfect conservation of its walls, which almost seems to represent a sort of enchanted fortress.
