The Strada delle 52 Gallerie or “Road of 52 Tunnels” also called the road of the first army, is a mule track built on the Pasubio massif during the First World War. This is an extraordinary military engineering work, as it allowed the supply of troops perched on the peaks.
This grandiose work, consisting of a path of 6,555 meters in the rock and 52 tunnels, was built between February and November 1917 by the 33 Miners' Company of the 5th Army Corps of Engineers regiment of the Italian Army. Among the most famous and characteristic galleries we find:
the number 19 which, with its 320 meters, is the longest and most articulated, as it develops in a 4-hairpin spiral path; the number 20 which was built inside a rocky tower which, to overcome a significant difference in height, turns on itself like a corkscrew and, finally, the 47, through which you reach the highest point of the path (2,000 meters ).
The excursion is suitable for anyone, the route is always very popular with people walking and also with families. Pay attention to the ice that forms during the colder periods. We recommend a calm pace to enjoy the wonderful landscape that will surround you.
