In this article we discuss the Porto Caleri Botanical Garden, a nature reserve of the Po Delta Regional Park.
The Porto Caleri Botanical Garden is a nature reserve and botanical garden located in the southern part of the Rosolina Mare coast, in Porto Caleri. It extends over an area of about 44 hectares, along a path that winds through the pine forest, the dunes and small ponds, thus allowing you to reach the beautiful Adriatic beach. The area was created by the Veneto Region in 1990, with the aim of preserving this unique spontaneous natural environment of considerable scientific interest.
The visit to the garden, which can be carried out thanks to various paths, allows you to understand and admire the continuous change of these habitats and its particular vegetation. The entire area is spread over three paths of different lengths, most of which are built on stilts, allowing you to closely contemplate and discover this extraordinary environment.
The shortest path is 650 meters and practically crosses the pine forest, the intermediate one is about 1600 meters long and extends between the coast and the inland areas, while the longest, of 2850 meters includes all the Mediterranean scrub, with dunes, the pine forest and the wetlands.
The visit to the Botanical Garden of Rosolina Mare, compared to the nature reserve which is free, costs about 2.50 euros per person, and allows you to go from the forest to the pine forest, from freshwater to saltwater ponds, from fossil dunes to the beach golden. In this area, unlike botanical gardens, human interventions are limited to the maintenance of the paths, leaving the natural decomposition process in the undergrowth, thus favoring the formation of the humus layer necessary for plants to feed.
The pine forest behind it is mainly composed of maritime pine and stone pine, but also by the presence of holm oak, witness of the spontaneous formation of a Mediterranean-type wood, instead in the freshwater areas we find hygrophilous species, including the bones, the sedge and the drinking straw. In 1992, a suggestive equipped path was created in the nature reserve through the brackish environments of the Caleri lagoon.
