In this chapter we discuss one of the most beautiful and evocative excursions in the Zoldo Dolomites: Hiking Around the Pelmo Mount.
Hiking Around the Pelmo Mount, for expert hikers, is a path of great beauty that allows you to contemplate all sides of this splendid rock formation. It presents itself with a particularly varied itinerary that alternates the high rocky walls, with the enormous valleys of the eastern side.
All along the way you will have at your side the massif of Mount Pelmo and Pelmetto, also called in local dialect, "Caregòn del Padreterno" or the Throne of God, for its curious shape that resembles a chair. The local popular legend tells that the Padreterno, after having created the Sorapiss, the Marmarole, the Antelao, the Cristallo, the Tofane and the high peaks of the Cadore, was so tired that he created the Pelmo to be able to rest and hence the Venetian name "Caregòn del Padreterno".
For Hiking Around the Pelmo Mount is recommended to start from the Forcella Staulanza because, in doing so, you travel less difference in height than other possible approaches. Going up to the Triòl dei Cavai you approach the Pelmetto, (from here you can also reach the rock with the dinosaur footprints), continue to the wide pasture valley of Le Mandre, a panoramic point of great beauty, you cross the Lach area and wanders the south-eastern ridge of the Pelmo, up to the Rifugio Venezia. where the view of Cadore and Ampezzo is truly spectacular.
The excursion continues towards the Forcella di Val d’Arcia, where even the most tiring stretch begins. It is at this point, in fact, that it is possible to pass to the northern side with the help of metal cables by connecting to the Flaibani path, used in the past by chamois hunters.
Once past the fork, go down to the Città di Fiume Rifugio and continue to Forcella Staulanza. The excursion is not suitable for anyone, the route is quite popular, but reserved exclusively for expert hikers and those who own a via ferrata set. Pay attention to the ice that forms during the winter. We recommend a calm pace to enjoy the wonderful landscape that will surround you.
