In this chapter we discuss a particularly important naturalistic area located on the Po Delta Park, the easy walk at Ca’ Mello Oasis.
The easy walk at Ca' Mello Oasis is a highly recommended experience, as it testifies to a habitat of the past, when nature dominated these lands, reeds grew spontaneously and rivers flowed into the lagoon.
This ecosystem, rich in biodiversity, is particularly fragile, therefore, it is recommended to behave in an educated manner, respecting animals and nature, in order not to ruin the precarious and unique balance of these lands. The Ca' Mello Oasis is located on the Island of Donzella, in the Po Delta Regional Park in the province of Rovigo, a unique territory of its kind, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Established in 1997, the Po Delta Regional Park is the largest wetland in Europe and the Mediterranean, with around 700 sq km of land and water, still evolving today, thanks to the contribution of sediments from the Po River to the sea. At the mouth, where fresh and salty waters are mixed, there is the fall of silts, clays and sands which, depositing, emerge forming the benches and therefore a new coast line.
The easily accessible Oasi Ca ’Mello walk winds its way through thick reeds, waterways and aquatic plants that color the landscape with their incredible flowers. Just a few steps will be enough to meet the first water birds that, right here, have found both a safe home to live and reproduce, and an environment rich in food.
In any case, just have a little patience, place yourself among the equipped huts and wait for the parade of many species such as: Herons, Ducks, Gallinelle d'Acqua, Garzette, Nitticore, Tarabusini, Marsh Harriers and many more. The area, not very large, extends over 40 hectares, in a freshwater marsh where the basin of a branch of the Po river was once located, now disappeared. We recommend a quiet pace to enjoy the wonderful landscape that will surround you.
