In this chapter we discuss one of the most fascinating areas of the Dolomites, a World Heritage Site, the marvelous Misurina Lake.
Misurina Lake is located at 1754 meters and lies in one of the most beautiful areas of the Alps, surrounded by woods and high-level tourist facilities. The Dolomite peaks that surround it are of exceptional grandeur, in fact they are among the most famous and spectacular of the Dolomites, which, since 2009 have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Specifically, to the east of the lake we find the Cadini di Misurina chain of the Sesto Dolomites, to the north the road leading to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and to the south the Sorapiss Group of the Ampezzo Dolomites.
It is an ideal place for those who want to take pleasant excursions in contact with nature, suitable for both families and experienced mountaineers, or to spend a relaxing day away from city stress. In winter the lake freezes completely, becoming so practicable in all its extension, in fact on the surface there are games of polo with the horse. The particular climatic characteristics of the area make the air suitable for those suffering from respiratory diseases. In fact, near the lake is the only center in Italy for the treatment of childhood asthma.
A legend tells that this enchanting lake was a gift from the fairy of Mount Cristallo to the daughter of King Sorapiss, a very capricious little girl called Misurina. This pretty little girl insistently pleaded with her father, to get her the magic mirror from the fairy, to be able to read the thoughts of anyone who was mirrored.
The fairy lasted a long time, because she didn't want to please the spiteful child but, faced with the tears of the king, she ended up consenting, setting however very harsh conditions. In fact, the fairy had on Cristallo Mount a beautiful garden full of beautiful flowers, and the excess of sun made them wilt prematurely.
Then he decided that, in exchange for the magic mirror, the king would agree to transform himself into an imposing mountain in such a way that he protected the marvelous fairy garden with his shadow. Moments later, while Misurina contemplated his large mirror, King Sorapiss began his transformation, swelling and changing color, his hair became trees and his deep wrinkles became crevasses, thus giving rise to the majestic Sorapiss group. Legend made famous by a song by Claudio Baglioni recorded on the album Saturday afternoon.
