In this article we treat the delicious and famous Marostica cherry, the first in Italy to have the PGI recognition among cherries.
The Marostica cherry is a delicious round fruit, red and with very firm flesh, produced exclusively in a hilly area on fertile and potassium-rich soils. It was the first cherry in Italy to obtain the European IGP recognition mark, Protected Geographical Indication, which indicates the peculiar characteristics of a product whose production takes place exclusively in a specific geographical area.
The Marostica cherry IGP tend to have a heart-shaped shape, with a minimum circumference of 23 mm, the skin must be of a color ranging from dark red to fiery red depending on the variety. It is a fruit characterized by an average firm, juicy pulp, with a full and very pleasant taste.
From the nutritional and health point of view it is a very precious fruit, in fact they are rich in vitamins, potassium and antioxidants. It is preferably consumed in the fresh state as soon as it is harvested from the tree, but at the same time it lends itself very well to the preparation of preserves and jams, or under grappa, alcohol or red wine. In many restaurants it is paired with meat, fish, salads or simply in a typical cake.
