In this chapter we discuss the imposing and majestic Military Shrine of Asiago, one of the most important of the Great War.
The Military Shrine of Asiago or also called the Leiten Shrine is one of the most important ossuaries of the First World War, it is located on the Colle del Leiten in the municipality of Asiago in the province of Vicenza. This area was severely damaged and occupied by Habsburg troops during the conflict, only later did the fascist regime choose these areas to build one of the largest shrines in Italy.
This area of the Asiago plateau has gone down in history for being the only area of the Italian front where it fought for the duration of the conflict, from May 24, 1915 to November 4, 1918, and was the scene of some of the battles harder and more bloody, such as the one on Mount Ortigara and the Strafexpedition (punitive expedition).
The Military Shrine of Asiago preserves the remains of Italian fallen soldiers from 35 different cemeteries scattered here and there on the plateau of the seven municipalities. Many well-known and unknown Austro-Hungarian soldiers from the cemeteries of Stoccaredo, Cesuna, Canove, Gallio and Marcesina were also gathered in the crypt.
Inside we find the remains of 33,089 Italian soldiers, including 20,291 unknown, arranged in individual niches placed alphabetically along the various galleries. The project to build this imposing monument was by the Venetian architect Orfeo Rossato, who designed it in a single block of concrete and marble, topped by a huge Roman-style arch, 47 meters high.
The works ended in 1938 and was inaugurated in the presence of many authorities and King Vittorio Emanuele III. The Military Shrine of Asiago together with the Ossuary of Pasubio, the Ossuary of Mount Cimone and the military Shrine of Mount Grappa appear in one of the four paintings on the coat of arms of the province of Vicenza.
