Villa Saraceno

Villa Saraceno, located in the isolated Vicenza countryside between the historic center of Vicenza, and the wonderful walled cities of Montagnana and Este. In this area of the Vicenza province, we find other splendid Palladian works to visit, such as the Pisani factory in Bagnolo, villa Pojana in Poiana Maggiore and finally villa Saraceno.

The villa has perfectly preserved the structure and functionality that the sixteenth-century patrons had designed for her.

In fact, this work was designed by Andrea Palladio around 1548 for Biagio Saraceno, a prominent public man, who asked the architect to restructure an existing agricultural courtyard. The use of stone is limited to the frames of the windows and doors, a choice that highlights the overall simplicity, with a short staircase leading to the loggia on the main floor, embellished with three arched openings, surmounted by a beautiful tympanum with pilasters .

The building is crossed frontally and posteriorly by two rivers, which insert it into the suggestive natural panorama of the lower Vicenza area. The structure recalls the typical Venetian palace, which presented itself with a door towards the water perpendicular to another door towards the earth.

A typical solution that allowed an ideal continuation between land and water, so that passing through the villa, it created a sublime decoration perfectly contextualized to the surrounding landscape. Its interior develops around a central T-shaped hall, the loggia and the hall retain only part of the decorations of different hands made after 1570.

Since 1989 the structure has been owned by the British foundation The Landmark Trust, which took care of the renovation, and which today rents the entire property from which sixteen beds have been obtained. To visit it, unless you intend to reside there, you must make arrangements in time with the caretaker. Villa Saraceno together with the other Venetian villas since 1996 have become part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
