The Capitaniato Loggia, also called Bernarda Loggia, is one of the most powerful and extraordinary creations of the architect Andrea Palladio. Started in August 1571, it was the seat of the Captain, the representative of the Venetian Republic of this territory, and imposes itself directly on the central Signori Square.
The Capitaniato Loggia
A place of passage, a crossroads of business and leisure, the square is the cornerstone of the life of the city, and of all its historical center, witness of great events and demonstrations that have marked the course of history.
In its construction Andrea Palladio found himself challenging himself, since, in that same period, he was already engaged in another construction site in the same square, namely that of the Palladian Basilica, which began again in the 1940s.
All the elements refer to Palladian architecture, its facade is presented in a giant order on four Corinthian half-columns, on the ground floor there is an open space with three round arches and on the first floor there are three large windows with small and elegant balconies with balustrades.
The works of the Loggia stopped in 1572 and, to complete the project, Giovanni Antonio Fasolo and Lorenzo Rubini were subsequently asked to paint the interior and exterior decorations with paintings that celebrate the victory of Venice in the Battle of Lepanto.
A conflict to which the city of Vicenza contributed with economic disbursements and with the participation of Vicenza's soldiers, as well as supplying timber for the construction of ships from the Asiago plateau.
The beautiful square, which was upset by the aerial bombardments of the war, was subsequently repaved and, at that time, it was decided to lower the level by creating two steps, as a base, in order to give the building impetus and elegance.
