Borghetto, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, is located on the borders between Veneto and Lombardy, between the Virgilio and the Seriola Prevaldesca canals, which flow gently between the coves and rushes of these wonderful lands.

The historic village of Borghetto

Once this village was a strategic ford of the Mincio river, now, however, it expresses all the poetry of a small village with a medieval atmosphere thanks to the ancient mills and the numerous swans that swim calmly. A dream place, quiet and particularly characteristic, formed by two beautiful villages in the same municipality, that of Borghetto and that of Valeggio sul Mincio.

Borghetto

Borghetto has Lombard origins and its name means "fortified settlement". This inhabited area, in fact, arose at a strategic point, given that the customs officer resided here, who collected indirect taxes on trade and consumption of goods, which they crossed and sailed on the river.
During the Middle Ages, Borghetto was disputed between Mantova and Verona, and once passed into the hands of the Scaligeri, they built a first wooden bridge near the ford, surrounded the village with walls and modified and reinforced the structure of the Valeggio sul Mincio Castle.

Borghetto

With the passage of time the Duke of Milan, Giangaleazzo Visconti incorporated the Veronese territory among his possessions, and at the end of the fourteenth century built the bridge-dam, with the aim of ensuring the impenetrability of the eastern borders of the duchy, barring the river at the navigation, and thus changing the waterway.

Borghetto

Today Borghetto is only a handful of houses built along the course of the Mincio river but still retains medieval traces in the stone houses, in the old church bell tower, in the two ruined fortresses of the Visconti bridge and in the old mills. Its timeless charm changes with the passing of the hours and seasons, just an aperitif at sunset in one of the many places to fall in love with this village.

This area is also ideal for those who love mountain biking, thanks also to the many cycle paths and the many opportunities to practice outdoor sports. Worth noting is the famous Tortellino di Valeggio sul Mincio, created with a puff pastry with egg thin as silk, cut, knotted and enriched with a tasty filling.

In June this typical specialty is celebrated by organizing the "Love Knot Festival", in memory of the contrasted love between Silvia and Captain Malco which blossomed within the castle walls.
