Possagno, is a small and pretty town in the province of Treviso, surrounded by the hills of the Marca Trevigiana a few kilometers from the famous city of Bassano del Grappa.
Possagno Temple
It is the birthplace of Antonio Canova, and among its streets it houses both the famous Canovian Temple, and the Gipsoteca with terracotta sketches and plaster models of his most famous works.
In particular, the imposing Canovian Temple was designed at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and built on a sunny rise so as to seem almost a mirage in a landscape close to the mountains.
This white, solemn and neoclassical style building rests on three large stairways of different slopes and on a vast cobblestone of white and black cogoli, gathered along the Piave river and arranged in artistic geometric shapes. Its interior is majestic, with a large dome divided into large drawers, with a golden rose window in the center.
Along the walls we find stone panels carved in relief of the Creation and Spiration of the Soul, works by the master Canova. On a niche on the left we can admire a plaster of the famous Pietà, portraying Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus. Above the main altar is the Deposition of the Christ of the Cross, by Canova.
